I am looking for a seat with 5 casters (3-4" for rolling over chips?) and a adjustable seat. If you use one now by your ShopSmith I would be most interested in hearing what your likes/dislikes are about it and if you would recommend it.

I see no one has replied, and I don't have a direct reply either. However, you may want to post this question on routerforums.com. They have a sub-category under General Woodworking called "Special Needs Woodworking", maybe you'll find an answer/suggestion there?

I have a couple old office chairs I use out in the shop, but only for shooting the bull when friends stop by.

Their height is too low for use at any work bench and most equipment. Because they do roll so easy, some of the stability of a stool would be lost. I have thought about getting a drafting chair, sticking casters that can be locked to see how that might work.

If height adjustment is not an issue, you might want to look at a rolling garage stool (harbor freight has a cheaper one), pop out the stock casters, then replace with 4" urethane.

Personally I prefer something with a back, but then that's just me.

I think many of our brothers (and sisters) here can identify with pain as we work through it as we labor to do the things we love.

I like the idea of a quality drafting stool as a base with quality 3" casters. I'm going to look into that myself.

I was just looking at the Woodcrafter August sales flyer and they have a tall shop stool with a back but NOT on casters. I would think that it would be possible to replace the feet with casters.
The price is $50, however the reviews are not all the promising since seat and back are plastic.

Not sure if that may be something to consider

A drafting stool with the instant lift seat height adjustment would appear to be what you are seeking. I believe you can get them with a back and arms if desired. I tried to use a high stool with swivel seat but found I moved around too much to get much use out of it.
