New SS User With an old Mark V

Hi All,
I just picked up an 81/82 vintage Mark V. I've always thought they were cool and found what I thought was a good deal on Craigslist. The guy I bought it from fired it up, but he was selling it for his dad and didn't know much about it and of course I had never touched one. Been reading and youtubing for the last week and finally got the chance to dig into the unit and have found a few problems.
First issue is the speed controller. The handle turns easily and the speed changes, but the outside speed dial ring does not move so I have no idea what the speed is. Also, when I get it up to about half speed, if I let go of the handle it starts turning on its own until it reaches maximum speed. I pulled out the control assembly and it didn't look to be in that bad of shape. The outside speed dial did look like some of the teeth were worn though. Should I just get a new speed control assembly?
Second issue is the sheave closest to the motor. While turning the motor by hand there is a slight scraping sound that seems to be coming from the sheave touching one side of the motor mounting area (not sure what it is called). With the unit running under power there aren't any weird sounds until it gets into the fast range, then there is a terrible screech. I'm hoping it is just the sheave rubbing against the mount and not a bad motor or bent shaft. Anybody seen this before?
Thanks,
-matt

Welcome to the zoo!!!! I cant help with some of your questions, but there are so many here that can, that JPG guy is one of the best, so are a few others.
I picked up a freebie that just squiled like a stuck pig , it was a matter of elimination half speed,or faster, did some testing, it was a motor bearing. Not saying that is your problem, but you will get all the help you can possibly get, here.

Mat,BTW, the one with the bad motor bearing was about the same age/era, funny, I have 2 ERs original motors and quill bearings and run great, a 57ish greanie that do to neglect changed the belts and bearings, same with the goldie, long as I was in there, and the bearings are about 7$ each so why not.
I am talking quill bearings, motor bearings is a whole different project!!

Yeah, I don't have the tools to pull or press motor bearings. That is gonna suck if that is the problem. It really looks like the sheave is touching something, but I can't tell when it is up to speed.
When the guy dropped it off it didn't make that noise, but it was plugged in to an extension cord, so it might not have been at full speed when I checked it. If I post a video, do you think you could tell if the sound is the same as the sound when your bearings went bad?
Thanks for the info though.

Absolutely, pictures, videos all help these guys. They will get it figured out!
BTW, you have never owned anything so repairable. Everything can be fixed!

Matt, these things are so easy to redo, designed by a German Jew Engineer,
but DONT buy a BEEMER, motor bearings are a bit more complicated, I just find a CL SS that works. And replace.

The outer ring gear that 'indicates' speed is actually merely driven by a small gear(and an idler gear) on the control knob. If teeth are missing the ring will not track the control knob.
The gears on the control knob have a habit of becoming broken also. A new knob and/or a new ring should correct that.
As for the fan sheave making noise, a likely cause is the spacer that separates the sheave from the end of the motor. For a while a too thin spacer was used and it liked to embed itself into the softer aluminum sheave thereby decreasing the clearance. . .
The 'auto' speed increasing may be caused by a too narrow motor belt. I do not understand why that causes that, but I have seen it. I think a skewed porkchop(caused by splayed support arms) can also cause auto increase.
As for videos, thay can be linked from youtube, but not posted directly.
I am sure you have ? about how to proceed. Fire away
And pay no mind to that ERLOVER, I think he lives just north of Milwaukee!!!

Wow JPG, they weren't kidding. You are the man! It looks like the teeth on the back side of the control knob are in REALLY bad shape. 1 item that I will be replacing.
For the sheave on the motor, how do I go about checking that spacer and fixing it? Are any special tools required to remove that sheave? I haven't seen anything online about removing that one.
The motor belt does look pretty worn and is slightly under .5 inches. I'm going to replace it too. The support arms on the porkchop look a little spread out as well, another good reason to replace that entire speed control assembly.
Thanks for the help!

Nevermind on part 2. I found some info on the motor sheave, or the fan sheave as it is called. Looks like the only tools I'll need are a spring compression board and the trusty 5/32" allen wrench. I suppose removing the fan sheave and turning on the motor will tell me if it is a bearing that is bad or the sheave rubbing on something. Thanks again everyone.
