Some time ago I thought a forum member was building some layout software, similar to MaxCut, but I can't find reference to it

Am I crazy, or can someone point me in the right direction?

Wishful 'thinking'? YEP.

I do it the old fashioned way.

And I do write code! None that includes such diverse decision making though!

Nobody has figured out how to write software that runs on my Layout Computer yet. My Layout Computer is inside my head, and it comes with all the software needed to do even the most complicated jobs. Technology will never get advanced enough to help me with this.

Is Google's software, "SketchUp" what you are looking for?

I don't know about a member here but there is Fit It, written by Mario Cappellano, "The Woodfather", who is a member on Lumberjocks.

For a bit over $14 I bought a copy. A friend is building a mega bookcase and new kitchen cabinets to justify the SawStop he just bought. Only problem so far is that files don't export so they can be printed in Windows 10 (sent an email to Mario about it and he will look in to why this next week), but using Snip as a work around is easy enough.
I like that the default positioning allows a cut across the sheet to make it less cumbersome to break down, though this can be changed if you want.
Yes, using the grid paper or the internal juxtaposition calculator (brain), works, also. . If either or both are your go to plan system then save the money.
Where this has really come in handy is all the shelving but especially face frame pieces of the upper cabinets.

I need to contact the developer, too. I tried it out and liked it enough to buy a copy.

I only tried starting with a small project laying out some small pieces on a 5½" x 48" board. I really like the layout options and automation, but the output png files are way too small for print. That board got reduced to a 45 x 528 pixel image (less than ¼" x 3¾" printed). And only 41 x 359 of that represents the board itself with the rest filled with cut off text.

Maybe it works better on large project or with sheet goods? Unless I missed something I can't really use it as it is.

I'll compose an email with suggestions later this week and see what comes of it.

If you are using Windows, try using the Snip tool to create a printable file. Those can be scaled and should allow you print something large enough to see well.

Thanks, but I am very familiar with computer graphics. The snip tool creates a bitmap image (png, gif, and jpeg). The png file saved by the program is a bitmap image. These can be scaled in any image program (I have several, including PhotoShop). But bitmap images do not scale well compared to vector-based image files.

They require lots of pixels to print at a decent size. I doubled, tripled, and quadrupled the image size (4x to print it about 10" long). Sure, the image scales up that large, but is not really useable that way.

I still haven't played with it for larger projects. Things are on hold around here while having the house painted, yard aerated, and a tree felled.
