I was sanding plugs (there are 3 in the one pic and 1 in the pic w/o a flash) I made to cover screws and got carried away - blowing through the veneer. I'm looking for ways to repair. Any help would be appreciated. The size is 1.25 x .5. Thanks for reading.

I think that this could be touched up with some combination of some colored furniture touch up powders, shellac, and a graining brush -- but those techniques take practice to perfect.

You could use an inlay.

An inlay was my thought also, but I never have made one, only read about them.

Not knowing what your project is and how the "mistake" will be seen I can't really give a specific suggestion. But when I do something like that, instead of hiding it I figure out a way to work a decorative inlay or applique into the project so it looks like it was supposed to be there. I find that works better than fixing the problem.

An old trim carpenter once told me that a truly good carpenter knows how to hide his mistakes so they can't be seen.

The October issue of Wood Magazine on page 76 has an article on repairing "sand through ply errors." Basically they used an exacto knife, wood color pencils, paint to reconstruct grain lines that match the wood. Also some artistic use of stain should help you cover the mistake.
I would also try wood repair lacquer that you melt into the error. You be able to easily put grain lines in it.

I emailed the customer and sent a couple of pics and described the location on the unit. He got back to me and said it would be covered by a stereo speaker and not to worry about it! I better go buy a lottery ticket.....

Then ...... since the customer has OK'ed it as is, use this as a learning experience and try to fix it with the techniques presented (which I find, as a newbie, very interesting) ....
