No stain/finish on the wood? For ambient lighting I could see a frosted glass dome on a table in the corner of a living/family room to take the harshness away or if available a smoked glass dome. For wood from the scrap/cut off bin, Cheery, Maple or Walnut.

Looks like he wasted no time in finishing it. Dropped it off about 2:00 this afternoon and it is done.

I finished the third lamp base up today. I had been waiting on some parts and they arrived so I could get things moving again. This last base is the same as the second, well close enough since I had to work off memory without the other here to measure off of.

There were some revisions requested so the second and third will be look alike. Some heavy metal has been added as well as a brass insert for where the cord enters. The heavy metal is screwed in to threaded inserts, (the parts I was waiting on). This one doesn't have a finish yet but I think he will copy the other one color wise.

Now I get to work on one for me! Well when I get the time to do so.

Of course there are pictures, because yet it happened.
BTW the cord insert is still threaded so it can be removed. Once it is done the treads can be drilled out so it has a smooth bore. Parts are brass so it should be pretty easy.

Final finished my lamp today. I have a couple of pictures to prove it happened.

These first two are of the base just after I drilled a series of 12 holes and just after I filled the holes with dowels.
This was an experiment with an idea I had and wanted to try out. It turned out OK but now I wish I had done it differently.

BTW the remainder of these photos were shot with phone camera. So without any other comments here are the rest of the photos.
If I were to do it again I would make the dowels go through the whole piece, I like how they looked so well that when I put the felt on the bottom I decided to let them show, well show for me when I pick it up, others will never know.

I think this about wraps up this thread unless someone has a question or other comment.

IMHO the dowel thing did not do anything for me, at least with the wood/dowel combo you used, I think no dowels and a KISS!!!

Got to revisit one of the bases today. My son broke the dome and had to get a replacement. The replacement is close but just slightly smaller diameter so it will not fit the groove.

As I had expected when remounted it is slightly off from its original location. It was close enough to work and I enlarged the groove. When I went to find this thread it was hard to believe it was from back in 2015, well almost 2016...... just doesn't seem it was that long ago.

Mine I moved to a shelf near the bed and use it for a night light. I added a dimmer slide so I can go from a glow to not much more. I did check to see if I could use the "new" replacement domes and I can't either. Not going to worry about it until I have to, which might be never.

Nice !! looks like it was a fun project .

Now is the over thinking part. The glass dome will be pretty stable but the wood will move. It will move like wood does and what I would not like to see happen is for the wood movement to damage the dome as that is the expensive part of the project ($25+).

I didn't see mention, but when you insert the cord through the hole in base ( from outside to inside the base) tie a knot in the cord to act as a strain relief and won't pull back out. Leave some slack and feed to the socket on the light.

I some how miss a whole lot of posts, and see now that you have done this as jpg has suggested, looking good.

The dome is a loose fit. Yea you would not want to fit it such that wood movement might crack it. I have at least 1/16" extra room and it has worked fine. BTW way this is not a new project but from back in 2015 so it is pretty stable and time tested.

As for the cord, if you look back where you can see underneath you will see a cable tie on the cord that keeps it from being pulled to far.
