500 vs. 505/510/520 Shaper Fence ?

Hi,

I have the 510 with Shaper fence which I've used a couple of times.

Lately I've fixed up an older 500 which I foresee dedicating mostly to "vertical" taks such as drill-press and maybe one day the OPR. (Also my Wagner Safe-T-Planer.)

I've never seen the 500-model's Shaper Fence, to fully comprehend the differences present in the newer-models' Shaper Fence. (I know the table-insert would obviously be different, but I'm talking about the Fence itself.) I don't really know how the 500 shaper fence mounts to that table.

Should I be able to mount a 510 Shaper Fence to a 500 table, provided I can accept drilling holes in that table?

Thanks,
Chris

For the 500, the fence attached to the edges of the table. For the 510, it attaches to holes in the table top.

I'm not sure about drilling the table top. You'd have to do some careful measuring.

I think I had to get a new fence as you couldn't just change the attaching clamps.

Chris, It is my guess you can drill holes and mount your shaper fence. I think that was mentioned in the shaper fence instructions. There may have even been a template for drilling. Check to make sure!! Shopsmith will know if a template is available.

Here's another maybe temproary suggestion - Joint an edge and a face of a 2X6, cut out a space with enough diameter to enclose your bit, clamp this fence into position and shape. You could even face glue two boards to get a taller 3" fence.

If this is the fence being discussed, my Mark 510 table is predrilled for mounting the fence.

If the fence being discussed is 555474, it is clamped to the table with a "U" shaped clamp. The clamp is 513087M.

The documentation that I have (555475/333474) makes no reference to drilling holes in the table and does not provide a drilling template.

The fence shown here appears to be the same as what I have but under a different Part Number and Name.

when i changed over to the 510 i had to redrill table . ss did send me the templet. thru the mail no cost. just goes to show u the great support we have in them. and linda at ss.to me is indepensible. if u look under the table there is on left and right side there r flat spots where u drill them. not all that much to measure. bigest thing was havin right drill bit . which i didn't. and i believe i had to tap the hole. short trip to lowes solved it . but complete instruction came with the templet.

Thanks folks,

After looking around I've seen more literature of how the 500 fence was originally designed, and how the 510 fence differs. Since my 500 table is nothing great cosmetically, I may go for drilling it to accept my newer 510-fence and mounting-bolts. I'll measure 9 times, drill once, hopefully.

I was also curious if anyone had a 500 Mark V with Shaper Fence, and if they had upgraded to 510 or 520, what they had to do with their Shaper Fence to keep in business....

This probably doesn't need to be said and in fact may not even be applicable to the 500 table. But if you are going to drill into the table be careful to avoid drilling out any of the support ribs.

Still have mine and have done nothing yet. To stay in business, I bought the shaper set w/fence for my (now) 520.

Hmmmm....

I just looked at the 500 table and where I would drill holes to accept a 510 shaper fence. They seem to be mighty close to table support-ribs. I will think this over some more.
