Quill return spacer.

The spacer for the quill return assembly.
Does anyone know the measurement?

I cannot get the domed washer between the spacer and the internal yoke.
I measured my spacer and it is 2".
I tried to get my vernier gauge inside to measure the yoke spacing and it measure about 1 1/4".
The guy I bought it from had it assembled incorrectly (as near as I can tell from the diagrams and what I've read on the forum, and checking with my newer headstock) with the domed washer inside the yoke. I'm also wondering if that has been moved out of alignment.

I'm away from my machines currently, but are you talking about (current exploded diagram) #74 Quill Feed Sleeve?

I wonder if you have an exploded diagram for your own machine, to make sure nothing changed in the plans after 1959.

I just rebuilt an '81 machine and I had success as has been directed on this forum in past threads: From center-line of machine toward the front (speed-dial side)...
- Yoke
- #53 Spherical Washer, dome facing away from Quill
- #74 Quill Feed Sleeve (given the above orientation of the spherical washer, it comes out about flush with the casting boss on the front of the machine. If the spherical washer is faced the other way, then the quill feed sleeve didn't come out flush with the casting-boss, it was too recessed)
- #75 washer, which is a light springy thing
- Knob

I had seen a '57 machine last year and didn't know how much it had been messed with. On that machine, in the place of a #75 washer was a substantial aluminum spacer type of washer. Don't know if that was correct for that vintage or not.

I read your post and looked at my diagram again, frankly, the print is so small on the numbers that i couldn't make them out. I do have the original owners manual, but my magnifying glass isn't at the house right now. (I believe it is in my better half's vehicle)

I took the spring washer out as the previous owner had it inside the housing, and I put it in the same place as my newer headstock, on the outside against the stop "knob" on the speed dial side.
I put the domed washer next to the gears that run the guill in and out of the headstock.
Now everything seems to be working fine. The quill extends and retracts for the first time since I've owned the 59.

Thanks for the help, it made me open my eyes that the old unit might not assemble in the same manner as the newer 1 1/4 model.

I took picture of the pinion assembly as we were putting it back together with all the goodies in the right place and actually able to see them, and in color!. i agree the diagrams are slightly old i think they need to be revised with high definition qaulity :) well at least so we can make out what the washers look like, at first i was like what in the world is a spherical washer? so there i am googling the spherical washer, only to find out i cant even pronounce have of what the sites said (LOL). let me know all if you would like a copy or would like a color image of any thing in the MARK V Head stock. as i have it open till i get my motor reconditioned.

Scott, I'm glad to hear someone else was wondering about those washers.LOL

Thanks for the photo offer. Things seem to be working perfectly so I'm going to leave it "as is".
I have to take it apart and do some other things (like replace the power cord) so I'm sure to have ample opportunity to mess it up in the future.
Play mad scientist for a bit. :D
