I will be building a bench to mount a ER on to be dedicated lathe, I am not living at the shop and need to know when an ER is in the horizontal position what the dimension is from the center of the spindle down to the top of the bench top it is sitting on so I know how high to make my bench for lathe work.

Another feature of the 10ER , you have to make your own bench but you can make it any height you want.

Ron, thats the plan and out of 4x4 oak or Doug fur for the legs for weight. A shelf under the top to set weight of some high density material on.

I am thinking of making a slide out shelf/drawer, or more likely two side by each, on mine to store tools and accessories.
An option for the top of the bench would be to laminate it out of 2x4's on edge like the top on my workbench. Woodwork bench build
That would make it very solid and add a lot of weight.

I have often read that the center line of your lathe should be the same height as your elbow is from the floor.

I am certainly not an experienced turner so this may be incorrect.

I think you want your fore arm that holds the tool to be parallel to the floor and 90* to the turning at the start of the turning. The height of your elbow will insure that.

Bruce, I caught it!!! nI reality, I believe, and I have only been to a couple turning seminars/demos, the proper position you set your elbow into your side near/above your hip for control and you shift your body along the piece, not pivot your hand/forearm in an arc.
