Turned a 2' long 2x4 into Christmas wrapping. Should be a fun gift for them to open, although they may be expecting a leg lamp.

What's going it it?

This was the project of late. Dove tailed puzzle boxes. These ones are maple with mahogany keys. The maple gave me some trouble, but with a bit of creativity it turned out fairly nice. I'll pack them with Hershey kisses and wrap them in a box like above. A box in a box.

My favorite part of the project, hand planning out some perfect slices for "packing peanuts". It's just so satisfying.

Very cool! I've never seen a lid with the vertical dovetail piece like that. Does the horizontal dovetail piece on the bottom of the box slide to lock the lid in place?

Yes, the bottom key only slides 5/16" and holds in place with a small dowel hidden inside. It also loses the dovetail angle at one side so the sides can slide past. The top key is glued in, and the side Dove tail gets locked in from the bottom.

Its a neat design I found on a woodworking magazine. No hardware, just dovetails, rabbited miter joints, and glue. Finished of with spray lacquer.

The puzzle gets hard because it's near impossible to pull off the top of you don't understand the sides go with the top.

Oh and each gift with "wrapping" cost around $7 with finish and paint for the fragile markings.

Well, as much as I like the "packaging" I like the puzzle boxes even more! They look great!

LOL its hard to be proud of the packaging when it's made to be flimsy enough to destroy it without any tools. Just minimal glue and no hardware.
