White birch bowl

A friend of mine who is a snowbird brought a piece of white birch from Maine to me to see if I could turn it. It has an off center pith which caused it to never be balanced completely. I was going to give it away until my wife said that she wanted it.

Nice work Bill. Can you please ask your snowbird friend how long the birch has been drying? I ask because I dropped some birch trees last fall that are still on the ground. I eventually would like to turn something with it.

The tree had been down for awhile, possibly a year, and the outer edge was beginning to decay. If the tree has not been cut up yet there are products that you can get to put on the end grain so that the moisture will leave through the sides. Some people have coated the ends with thick latex paint with some success. I cut the sides of the bowl to about a thickness of about one inch and put a few coats of polyurethane on the end grain and let it dry for about another 3 months. There are a few very small cracks that were filled with CA glue so I will see what the future holds

Interesting gain. Thanks for sharing. Do you happen to have any before pictures of what this looked like before the turning?
