My buddy ran one of these on his kidnapped/hostage computer and fixed it.
They are free.

Glad it worked but, I wonder how it happened to begin with?
In this day and age one needs to run anti virus and anti malware programs. You should also
PAY for the premium versions. However, not all are worth paying for. I run eset NOD32 anti virus and Malwarebytes anti-malware. Both are paid premium versions on the three computers on my network. I have never had a problem, ever. My computer supplier (PC Laptops) says they are the best. I agree. I get daily updates to their virus data base.
One has to be very careful of the junk email they get and not click on links or respond to email that makes no sense.
I own two domain names. One is coming up for renewal. I got a junk email about a month ago that said the domain has been suspended for some BS reason and I needed to do bla, bla, bla and click on this link. I don't even use it I just own it. DUH! Now two days ago I got an email that the same domain was about to expire and I should renew it with them. They had the wrong expiration date. Besides it was not the ISP I registered it with. Today I got a snail mail letter from another registrar of domain names. They wanted $45 a year to renew and switch to them.
My ISP here in Salt Lake where I originally registered the name charges $10. Fortunately you can lock the name so nobody can change the servicing ISP without your permission.
FWIW, the ISP is Xmission.com. The have been in the business with the founder Pete Ashdown since 1992. I have been with them since 1992 when I was on dial up. An absolute solid, solid company that takes care of their customers. Just like SS. Check them out if you need web hosting or any other service.

John, he plays guitar and was some site and clicked on a link to look at some printed sheet music, and it all went to poop after that.

Well, you still have to be careful. If he had been running anti virue soft ware ( was he? ) then it should have warned him or prevented him unless he said yes. Mine does.
