Drive Sheave Bearing Spinning in Housing

I finally got my old Greenie headstock together for a test fit before I paint. Everything went together nicely and it runs well. It is a 1954 with the A-type sand-cast headstock.

When I was adjusting the speed control, on the high speeds I started getting a high pitch ra-ta-ta-ta-ta-tat squeal from the drive sheave. I think that I have tracked down to the drive sheave bearings are skip-spinning in the housing bore when you get up to the saw setting, and really bad any higher. At slow speeds they are stationary.

Is it safe to put a drop of Locktite blue on the outer bearing to lock it in place, or is there a better alternative? I don't want to permanently glue them in and not be able to get them out. What are your thoughts?

Thank you,
Jeff

That would be my first choice.(assuming it be the drive sleeve bearings).

Apply sparingly.

Nail polish?

Wood glue?(not gorilla)

look at page 12. the 660 is for that application BUT make sure it is the bearing is turning in the bore first.

I would believe the drive sleeve bearing is trying to seize and could destroy the headstock casing. I have used blue Loctite as a temporary solution for this situation until I could replace the bearing. Yes, you can remove bearings held with Blue Loctite, just take more pressure. I believe LocTite sells a solution that will remove the Blue Loctite from wherever it is applied. I do not believe the problem will go away just using blue LocTite. I normally always replaced the drive sleeve bearings with higher quality ABEC3 bearings (Ebay at) (http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-6205-ZZ-Premi ... SwuTxWAZi9) on any headstock rebuild I did for customers.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm going to try Bill's approach to this. The bearings a few years old and even if they are good I don't want to chance it.

I will order a set and let you know the result.
