I at 63 years young is one of the youngsters here. I am not as SS tech as most, I try and contribute when I can, mostly in WW or as the devils advocate, to somes hatred.
So as mom of 95.5 years young,96 in May, I got her brunch at 11am, her Home Care Giver showed up at noon for her bath/shower, then for the first time since June, over to the public room at the local library for the "girls" knitting clutch till about 330, and she is a Poster Child for them, most are in there 60s -early 70s!!!! Off afternoon for me, went bumming.
Since no shop here till I move some in spring out of storage and make my router table, and few other projects, other then mom, domestics here and cooking, which I love as much as WW, this forum and a few others is my life. So please bare with me if I vent on some or am a bit anti on a subject.
I appreciate all of you here.
Passsed up on a ER for 300$, no SC so not anything special for that price, even if it had one, here in WI a bit over priced.
Love, Mike F

I've seen it a few times, so I've got to ask... What's an SC?

Speed Changer.

Common on the Mark series, but a rare attachment on the original
Model 10 stuff.

We have 3 stepped pulleys. And, have to change the belts to get
different speeds. (Unless we have a speed changer.)

The original Shopsmith wanted a whopping 13 DOLLARS for this,
and most people didn't get one.

lilgodwin,
It is not just the ER Speed Changer, it is the coveted ER speed changer!!!!

Page 20 an option to changing pulleys and infinite speeds, they sell for a bout 175-225$ on Ebay when one is there. Heck I will buy a ER if it has one and the seller has no idea for 250-300$ just for the SC. Not to mention the ER is the best SS ever made.
Now in a SS the speed changing devise, sheaves are internal, but to have an ER with one is to be complete!!!!!!

lilgodwin,
here is the difference, on a modern SS the speed range is about 700rpm - about 7500rpm without any speed changing accessories, the Power Prow does what ever you want, but and ER with the speed changer on the low end is 425- about 1100rpm, high end pulleys is about 1100- 7500rmp and the high end numbers I maybe off on, so an ER for a drill press/lathe is so nice.
Here it is, but no speed #

lilgodwin,
do to one of the greats here, JPG just one of many here, here are the # on an ER with a SC, low end pulleys 425-1600rpm, flipped/reversed high end 1850-6800rpm, on both any where in between, variable speed.
If you have an ER without a SC and just the 3 step pulley arrangement here is what you have, 875,1750, and 3500rpm with nothing in the middle.

SKUO,Stevie ER Bro,
The original Shopsmith wanted a whopping 13 DOLLARS for this,
and most people didn't get one.
Back then I watched my dad heat up a brad nail in a egg beater hand drill over the flame on a gas stove to drill into some oak door trim!!!

FWIW, the top rpm of a mark 5/V is 5200.

......the top rpm of a 10 w/sc is 6800.
