Hi, newbie, first post. I purchased a Mark V Shopsmith, oh, about 35 years ago. Never did much with it. Kind of retired now and want to keep busy. I opened the cover of the band saw and noticed/remember the bottom wheel in missing the rubber that the blade would ride on. How should I proceed? New wheel or just new rubber? Thanks

Replace both and ignore the glue.





When you remove the old tires you will understand why!

Does shopsmith tell you to ignore the glue? Seems odd that they would sell you the tire with glue then???? Now the new tires are put on without glue but I have my doubts if the old ones will work like that....... anyway if I were doing it I would give them a call first.

I have yet to replace my shopsmith tires but I know on my other bandsaw that the glue is/was necessary. I did attempt to put one on and use it as I had no glue to use when it failed...... failure by having the new tire come off followed in minutes so I had to wait until the glue arrived to get the saw working again. Can't see it being different now.

I have replaced the tires with the glue and find that the glue will sometimes cause the tires to be "lumpy" (a technical term) that may cause a slight vibration. Putting the contact cement on the tire and the wheel is what caused my problem. When the contact cement was dry and the tire was installed I stretched the tire over the bottom of the wheel and of course it stuck but the problem is when I put the stretched area of the tire on the cement the tire wanted to stay stretched and caused uneven thickness over the circumference of the tire.
The tires should be tight enough without the glue if you keep the RPM's below 1000 RPM.

All I know re replacing tires with/without glue is what I have read here.

As for SS selling the glue, they have previously demonstrated a tendency to continue as they did before regardless of any current knowledge.

Again I have not done this to my shopsmith saw. This is the basic method I have used several times on my older saw. It works. Here is a reference to that method.

Now I see no reason this would not work for the shopsmith and if I were going to replace mine this is the path that I would take.

Thanks for saving me a buck Algale, come to Cape Cod and I'll buy you a coffee. I thought this would be easy, I'm glad I found this forum, surly I woulg have been up to my elbows in glue. I got your reply, Gino, and may take you up on the Cape Cod offer some day; when I lived in Massachusetts I made any number of trips to the Cape and to Nantucket.

I had some difficulties when installing the black bandsaw tires along with taking a lot of time to align the tire on the wheel. The first 2 sets of orange bandsaw tires I installed failed within the first year so I switched back to using the black bandsaw tires again. I did not glue the black bandsaw tires. I was lucky to get one of the first sets of Blue Max bandsaw tires from an Ebay seller. They came with an installation tool. I quickly found I could install and align the tire in about 1 minute time period using this installation tool. No glue is needed for the Blue Max tires. I have installed more than a dozen sets of these Blue Max tires without any negative feedback from the owners.
