2 Slot Table and Other Questions

I have a 1954 Greenie that I am fixing up, and I frequent the auction site quite a bit. I noticed some Shopsmith tables that have 2 saw blade slots.

What model were these for? Why the extra slot in the table? Why is it not on the 510 or 520 tables?

And lastly, what is the difference between a 500 and 505?

Thanks,
Jeff

A 505 is a stripped down 510. No floating tables nor connector tubes and legs.

The extra Mark 5 slot is to allow ripping in the range where the fence would need to bridge between the main table and the aux table. When SS needed to remake the dies, the second slot was abandoned. The 505-520 rails are accurate enough to not require the second slot. Besides there is a structural issue with the larger table. When the wider aux table was created, the rail for the 500 became the same as the main table. The greenie has cast in rails on both the main and the aux table.

Thank you JPG, the ripping explaination makes sense for the extra slot.

What years was the extra slot table offered? From what I've seen they are usually on the Goldie era Shopsmiths.

Would the 2 slot table work on my greenie, or would I have to get the same aux table to match? Not in the market to upgrade mine, but I am curious as to the other difference in the tables.

The 505 makes sense now too...thank you!

My factory new model from 1976 had the dual slots. A used 1978 I own did not. But with used items you don't have a great history so the year still is in question in my mind. I also have a 1979 but it was converted to a 510 so that still doesn't help. Perhaps an owner with a factory machine from that era can give you a better answer.

I do not know when the second slot was 'added'. I have assumed it was there from day one. However, the 1955 edition of PTWFE does not show it.

Interesting that the SS Inc. version does not either. But considering the pix are the same! . . .

I am suspicious the wider aux table was created to enable the elimination of the second slot from the '500' table. I think it was an adaptation from the 505-510 aux table. So 85 or so?

Realize SS Inc. also made "Mark 5"s until the 505-510 was introduced as a "Mark V".
