I knew I had seen them. I dug out this belt cover(wrinkled grey) that I obtained a few years back and behold!

Were/are there any differences between a Mark 5 and a Mark V (before they made the 510)?

Oh and the belt cover also has the hole plug('for access to oil the floating sheave').
Few! As far as I am concerned a mark V (500) IS a Mark 5.
Why the change and a total ignoring of 'Mark 5' by SS Inc. is not understood by me.
Perhaps there was a trademark issue with somebody. i.e. John Folkerith bought the dies etc. but not the trademark.

Interesting. Here is a plate with SS 22740. This is a 1978 model but one can never be quite sure, the paper work was also from 1978 but I got it used so......... It has the Mark 5 and the Vandalia OH address and the finish is textured gray and it is certainly not the wrinkle finish.

The other machine I have here is a 57336, that according to the previous owner was a 1980. The number checks out for that year so again I think this is correct. It too has the textured gray but the plate now shows the Mark V.

Gray-Rough/Texture according to shopsmith information. Splattered is I believe a better description.
Not sure what they are saying in the tool history chart as it is listed as 10/1984 but that is only what it says not what happened, perhaps more descriptive of what that year had but not a note of when the paint changed.
It is also interesting that the "C" headstock is listed as 1991 but I have a "B" dated 02/13/91. So the change had to happen sometime after that.
