I haven't done much in the way of woodworking for quite some time as health issues laid me low.

When we decided to clean house in the fall, a bunch of my hockey buddies came over to give us a hand. In 1.5 hours they moved fifty small bags of broken cement left over from my furnace replacement project, removed a tree house platform from my apple tree, cleaned up all kinds of other clutter, that in the end filled an 8' x 10' x 4' container. It's amazing where help comes from when you need it!

I made them each an oak bread knife as a Christmas gift and that went over pretty well.

Am now back home after recent surgery and anxious to get in the basement and start some projects. One fly in the ointment is that most things require the drill press and I am not allowed to lift more that five pounds yet so the SS is not yet in use, but the ideas are piling up.

One grandson ordered a tie box for Christmas to match my previous gifts to him but I was not able to do it so it is back on my to-do list along with more bread knives to give away as gifts.

I hope to start posting again around April, meanwhile it is nice to be back on the forum.

It sounds as though we might have an epidemic going here on the forum. I too am on medical restriction from the shop. No, I have a weight restriction as you do. The wife won't allow me in the shop because she can keep an eye on me.

All we can do now is wait for the Dr. to say OKAY

I cannot for the life of me remember where I saw it, but I remember seeing someone who set up a eye bolt secured to a steel plate on a floor joist directly above the raised position his Shopsmith for drill press mode, that he connected to his Shopsmith.

He had the eye bolt on it attached to round notched hardwood blocks that passed over and under the lift end of the way tubes. I think he used a Washer Locknut at the loop , and the eyebolt tensioned the blocks into T-Nut.

He used a rope block and tackle to lift and lower it. It was similar to the Grip-On Tools 2000-Lb. Pulley Hoist, Model# 18090 at Northern Tools that sells for $10.

That's the low cost method.

It might be a means to an end, and help you raise and lower it avoid lifting it if you have a fixed position where you are going to use it.

There is also the Shopsmith Lift Assist at just over $200 with shipping, where the portability issue doesn't matter.

Been there and done the 5 pound lifting limit a couple of times now. It is hard to control the urge to lift things and there are so so many things that you take for granted that are over the 5 pound limit. My wife caught me taking the gallon milk jug out.... 8.6 pounds when full.

There is no way you can get your shopsmith stuff going with out risking some heavier then 5 pound loads. Best either have help or hold off until they lift the restrictions. When they say 5 pound they really mean don't lift.

I've missed your project posts so get better fast and get back at it. We need pictures!

I had one incident occur, when I knew I was exceeding the the weight restriction, that scared the day lights out of me. I am now much more inclined to behave. The sharp pain in my chest also reminds when I am stressing that area.

The doctors all proclaim that I am healing much faster than their expectations. Sure isn't fast from my perspective.

I with you on that comment Dusty! One month since my surgery and I don't feel as good as the surgeon says I am.

OK, I'm half way through watching this video, where the guy grabs his jack.

Maybe it's just me, but my Model 10s already have a jack built in.

Slide everything towards the right, put the table in drill-press mode, and stand
the whole thing up. Leave the drill chuck off. Put a block of wood, between the
spindle and table. Extend quill to touch the block of wood. Release headstock lock,
and extend quill some more, to lift headstock. Rinse and repeat, until desired height
has been reached. (You'll need more blocks of wood.)

Hope this guy returns the jack back to the car!
