tried my hand a the ShopNotes Joiners mallet...made one for my brother too. Maple and walnut scraps i had laying around with a few coats of wipe on poly

Nice job on the mallets!
I can't remember the article in Shopnotes. What material is on the striking ends? Looks like leather.

Now you got me motivated! Jealous? Yeah a little!
I have two store bought mallets, both mechanics' dead blow tools. One is light weight and one is really heavy. Although they work, I always felt somewhat ashamed at not making a real woodworker's mallet such as the ones above. I've just got to make one of these!

they have some decent weight behind them as they are filled with BB's. if anyone needs plans i can scan and email them

I will have dig out my old copy if I can find it to see what the plans look like. That has to be some years ago, when was that issue published?
BTW it is still copyrighted so making distribution copies or reprinting them requires approval.
