I recently purchased the Workbench Magazine DVD. The DVD contains all of the issues from 1957 until it was discontinued in 2009. So far I have only covered the 50s & 60s. I was amazed to see their workshop contained a Mark 5 and was later upgraded to a Mark VII.
A lot of the projects, featured in these early magazines, are still applicable.

Are the issues in PDF format? Can they be printed?
I've been considering buying that set, but am wary of potentially getting non-PDFs or PDFs that can't be printed.

Yes, this DVD is in PDF Format.
I just finished printing a page from the July-August 1969 issue and several pages from the June 2009 issue. All the pages printed had sharp, crisp photos and lettering.
Kind of an interesting side note, the issues prior to 1997 had all of the old advertisements. In the 1997 and later issues all of the advertisements had been removed and left with blank pages. The blank pages were left so all of the page numbers would still correlate with the index.

Hmmm. Makes me wonder if they are setting the stage to charge extra for "residual" advertising.

Probably just a simple matter of page layout software. They probably moved to a new or different digital layout tool in 1997 and thus had the ability to generate PDFs directly from the layout software. The issues prior to 1997 were probably scanned in as PDFs (for the majority of them) or converted from another layout software with ads already placed (if they had a different software for it in the early 90's).
