Lathe chuck recommendation for e NEWBIE

Post by Doc »

Hi fellas,
I'm new to SS and woodworking. I bought a mk7 in June 2015, total lost my pu in July, then fell and shattered bones in my foot in August. The mark 7 came in 2 wks early and 2hrs before scheduled delivery. Luckily I had help to unload even though it stayed in my truck bed 2 mo before I had it put in the living room. (Wife was and still is psd off ) I found out later that it came with no turning tools(cutters) so I started viewing and researching turning info and videos and wondered what lathe chuck should I get for this mk7. While I researched , I lost my job a few days before Christmas, imagine that.and I still to this day have not plugged the mk7 in a wall socket. So now I'm trying to figure out what's the best chuck for this mk7 setup? I'm in no hurry,
I'm still disabled somewhat and won't be plugging it in soon , so I'll be practicing my waxing skills ,wax on wax off. Ha :) Good Grief, I could make a #1 hit country and western song , all that's missing is that my wife ain't leaving (yet). Ha ha ha. Oh , and my dog got killed also, .....no joke. Looks like I'm never gonna get to play with this mk7!!!
Well I just thought I'd share with u guys since I can't cut no wood yet. Lol. By the time I get all set up I hope to have all the basic tried and true tools I need when I do start enjoying my mk7.
Any pointers ,tips and advice is very much welcomed.
Thank all you guys in advance, you too Billy M whom I purchased my mk7 from the wkend he retired from SS.

Assuming you want to do some turning work. You need lathe chisels not a lathe chuck. Your Mark 7 came with a lathe drive center and a tail center. Any chuck can come later/ That is - of you can make piece with your wife.

If you are doing what I like to do and making a list and checking it twice then I would look at the Nova G3 chuck that shopsmith sells. Since you have time on your side you might want to wait for a sale or price them at several places. Just make sure you get one with the shopsmith adapter for your chuck.

I would go no lower quality then the Nova, that is my personal point of view but you do in some respects get what you pay for.

I'd watch the waxing, assuming you are using the shopsmith as a coffee table (and yes we have heard that before) you don't want your plates and cups sliding off.

Sorry to hear about your accident and the loss of your dog. Been a ruff year it sounds like.

So welcome to the forum and keep coming back with more questions or comments we always like to see new members here.

Search this site for postings on "lathe chucks" or for "Oneway Chuck" or "Nova Chuck" a lot of results will come up. I have posted twice on my opinion of the Nova and the Oneway. I own and use both.

Yes, the Oneway Chucks are available with Shopsmith adapters. Shopsmith used to sell the Oneway Talon chuck, but switched to the Nova, maybe when they brought out the Power Pro.

So mike,
Looks like one way or nova . I have a mk7 and and found out that an excoworker friend of mine ,who got terminated right after me ,is giving me an older SS .i don't know what model but I'm thinking the shafts are the same????!!!!
So out of the one way and nova which should I save for? And what do I need to go with it.
The SS pkg has pin jaws in the set offered but I don't know if that's a good price or deal????. I recently ordered a cutting ste and saw almost the same set with more cutters on amazon for 79 bucks. Guess i will find out what I have when I get started????!
I just want to measure twice and buy once. Lol , get my drift.
Thanks agin,
Doc
