Is $175 a decent price for a used SS belt sander claimed to be manufactured 1992 and have no rust and has the tilting fence.

Yeah, that sounds like a fair price. There's not much to those things, and even having to recover from quite a bit of rust on the plate is doable (from experience), though I wouldn't pay as much for it. If it looks good, I'd say go for it.

I think that's a really good price if compared to a new one. There's not a whole lot to go wrong with the belt sander EXCEPT the idler drum assembly, Shopsmith part number 502934, $105.69. All the magic of the drum sander is in the idler drum assembly. It's difficult to remove, dismantle and lubricate. If it hasn't been lubricated it will be stiff and will not roll smoothly and your belt will not track. Watch Nick Engler's video below. I paid more than $150 and I was glad to find it. My idler drum does not roll as smoothly as it should. I feel I'm on borrowed time with it and I was considering buying a spare 502934 from Shopsmith so as to be ready but I have not done that yet. You should also check out the Rikon 6x48 disk/belt sanders for comparison. One of them is on sale at Woodcraft through April 1.

I really enjoy my new-used belt sander. I bought a nice grit assortment of Deerfos brand 6x48 belts at the Woodworkers Show in St Paul last week for less than $5 each

Well I bought the SS belt sander for $175. It is in great shape and works very well!

Now, on the hunt for a planer!

Congratualtions whitehat. That's a pretty good price. Did the idler drum spin as freely as Nick's in the video or was it a little stiff like mine is? Good luck on your hunt for a planer.
