New Mexico and T or C

I see posts from our member in T or C New Mexico and am reminded of two amusing events in 1965-66 when I moved from New Mexico to New York.

The first was when I was stopped outside Chicago, IL by the highway patrol (not speeding because I was pulling a U-Haul trailer). I thought it was a hassle and when he asked for license, etc. I said, "No comprende ingles. Como se dice en espanol por forvor." He went to the back of my car and looked at the plate NEW MEXICO and then waved me on. Almost everyone north of Kansas and east of the Mississippi thought New Mexico was not in the US.

In early 1966 I was riding with a friend I had met who as also from New Mexico. She was from Truth or Consequences and her license stated T or C. The Suffolk County sheriff deputy who stopped her asked her what T or C was. She told him "Truth or Consequences". Probably because that was still a popular TV show he thought she was being a smart ass and asked again and when she told him he put her under arrest. I tried to intervene to explain but he just shut me down. Since he had called for backup and an impound truck to tow her car when they arrived I had a chance to explain to another deputy that T or C was indeed Truth or Consequences and why the name was changed form Hot Springs. I imagine one poor red-faced deputy was razed for months for his lack of knowledge. I doubt any of the others knew any differently.

Fortunately, older Americans now recognize that New Mexico is part of the continental United States. Not so sure about the younger ones.

Wow never knew New Mexico was part of the US. Do you need a passport to visit? Any special shot, like yellow fever vaccinations? Wow who knew!

In passing I wonder which side of Trump's wall will they be?

Personally I can't wait for "the Donald"'s (or as I call him, Mr. Trump) wall. It is getting dangerous to even travel on some highways in Southern NM and Arizona because of Mexican Cartel guerrillas. Of course the media doesn't say anything about that.

And, yes Ed, we will be North of the wall .... :D

I think the fault lies in the name. New Mexico, it sounds like Mexico just a newer part. Now they could have gone with East Arizona or South Colorado or even came up with there own name like Canada or something cool like that....

I mean who names there towns things like Albuquerque? Time to get a PR firm and get with the program, perhaps a new slogan like "The new New Mexico USA" Keep the USA in the message will help.

You know I wouldn't mind doing my part, maybe a grant of oh say 2 million for a years study on the problem and then say another 10 million for planning a bunch of billboards in every state proclaiming "Yes it says New Mexico but we are in the USA". On maps we could get the USA added just below the state name.... maybe get sports team called the "Roswell New Mexico USA Team" Perhaps a Winter Olympics for Santa Fe USA. Getting the word out for only 12 million sounds like a good start.

Ed from IL (who we all know is a state)

Not to mention all the children still crossing into the US from South America.

Children are the least of it: (but are a very real problem)
Five of the men were from Pakistan and one was from Afghanistan, the FBI confirmed to the station. "The group were with some Mexican nationals and were being smuggled into the country," FBI spokesman Kurt Remis said.http://www.ibtimes.com/isis-entering-us ... es-2192635
A brigade of veterans, former law enforcement, and private security personnel is patrolling the U.S. southern border with a renewed mission to protect the homeland from potential ISIS terrorists.

The Arizona Border Recon was formed in 2011 to help stop the flow of undocumented migrants and illegal goods crossing the border. It is made up of heavily armed men that patrol a 600 square-mile area on the Arizona-Mexico border.

Given the increasing threat from ISIS terrorists, the group is now worried that a potential terrorist could easily infiltrate the border. Tim 'Nailer' Foley, the 56-year-old founder of the group, says his hidden cameras have caught 'Middle Eastern guys with beards.'

"A couple weeks ago, 10 miles to the west of us, they got five Pakistanis and an Afghani trying to get through the border and they got caught," said Foley, a veteran and head of field operations for the group, referencing a report confirmed by the FBI. "On trail cameras, we've seen Somali and Sudanese – everybody and their brother is coming though that border." http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/news/2 ... errorists/
We need to close the border ... IMHO

I am looking for a Shopsmith instructor in New Mexico. I reside in Los Alamos and am willing to travel for sessions. Do you know of anyone who offers such a thing? Thanks for your help.
