PowerPro Chatter with Table Saw ??

I'm familiar with the bandsaw/PowerPro chatter issue, but today I was doing some cutting in table saw mode and felt like I was getting chatter.

So I checked for play in the drive chain. All seems well except I question the rotary play in the quill to drive mate. I secured the spt end of the shaft and spindle pully so it could not rotate then checked the quill spindle. As best I can understand this would be the play between the splined quill shaft and the nylon(?) receiver.

PS: Video is upside down from usual view. Headstock to the right, blade to the left.

Is this normal or excessive? And yes, I am certain the rest of the drive train is not moving. :)

I don't have a PP but that is very similar to what I get on my 520 with the standard 1-1/8 hp motor in terms of rotary play.

I too see some play. Not sure of a good way to measure it but it is there.

I tried to index off a line of the ring and it looks like mine moves about half the distance between lines.

Does that make sense?

Looking like mine is normal then. Funny the things I don't notice until I have a problem.

This amount of play in the spindle shaft is very normal. A while back (maybe 5-6 years or so) We had a couple of threads discussing this issue.

I've been watching my unit closely for the past several years - since getting my PowerPro. It started at zero play and has slowly increased.

As I remember (dangerous) the amount of play was 1/8' on a single tooth of a saw blade.

Guess the correct term for this movement is hysteresis. Credit to reible.

Just checked at the saw tooth and got 1/16". Thanks!

Hysteresis? Maybe.


This play/backlash makes the use of an index wheel on the back shaft less than perfect.

1/16" at 5" is about 0.7 degrees.

My half century old goldie says it shall get worse with use.

With the Power Pro constant accererating/braking, I wonder how the coupler will wear compared to 'standard' power train.

I have noticed the same issue. I have replaced two on different units and they stay tight for a few months of use and then they all seem to loosen up. It gets to be a problem when using the index wheel and router jig to make table legs as any movement at all puts the final product at risk. I don't think there is much you can do about it other than keep a new one around and only install it when one needs that level of accuracy. The one positive is that it only takes a few minutes to swap them out.

Do you think it would be of any help to pull the quill and rotate it a few degrees, then re- insert?

Never have figured which part wears the most. The metal or the nylon?
