Spindle Knob Set Screw Position

I was looking at the installation instructions for the lower blade guard and saw that when installing the blade arbor on the spindle you should align the blade arbor set screw with the"puttied" set screw on the spindle knob as a guide since it is aligned with the flat on the spindle shaft. Well mine isn't aligned with the flat. Is this a problem, and should I dig the putty out and re-align it with the flat? From what I see the knob is just to allow hand rotation of the spindle. I usually tighten the blade arbor by rocking the blade as I run down the set screw to find the flat by feel and never did use the knob screw as a guide. I also have a question about the lower blade guard but I'll make it a separate topic. Thanks, Bear

First, I don't know what a spindle knob is. Second the only puttied set screw AFAIK is on the top of the head stock. It runs in a channel in the quill and acts as a stop so the quill cannot be removed and to keep the quill from rotating.

If you are talking about the knurled silver collar at the bottom of the quill then the set screw is normally aligned with the flat on the quill shaft. So if that collar is not properly aligned then move it so it is and then you have a perfect indication of where your arbors should be tightened. That is where SS sets it, probably for that reason.

Thanks for the quick reply John. I called it a knob because that's what it was called in the original instructions I have. It's the knurled ring just behind the spindle shaft end. In fact it's called the spindle knob in the parts list. Anyway I'll probably align it with the flat or it will bug me by being off. I was just starting to go through the entire alignment procedure in the manual since I never did it since I got the machine last year. God Amighty it has more alignment steps than some of the airborne radars I used to work on!

The quill shaft has two tapered flats. The visible one and a second smaller one inside/behind it. Both are aligned identically radially on the shaft.

The knurled collar set screw should be centered on its flat the same as an arbor on the visible shaft.

Yes it comes from the factory with putty to prevent accidental loosening.

Another purpose it serves is to take up any end play in the quill shaft. Thus the shaft need be pulled up against the collar while at the same time pushing the collar in towards the headstock.

There are two versions - original and two bearing quill.

FWIW, my MK V 510 (at the time) that I bought new from the mother ship has no putty, neither does my brand new Power Pro head stock also bought from the mother ship. I also have a head stock I bought on eBay that has no putty or any signs of putty. Granted, it's history is unknown.

My older units all had the putty but some where along the line the quills started coming without it. Both of my new powerpros are clean as well as two two bearing updated quills, I have third that I can't access at the moment which was my first upgrade so who knows what it has. It is a more recent thing.

Well, that explains it I guess. My original new 510 was bought in 1994. The head stock from eBay is newer and the Power Pro is 2013.

Hmmmmmm - putty-less set screws huh? Sounds like a cost saving scheme to me.

Probably was/is but why not since it is not necessary?

Depends upon whether one wants to attempt to prevent inadvertent loosening of those set screws.
