I have searched using the forum search engine and not found this, so here goes. Maybe I didn't search deep enough.

So here is the question: The paint on my 1981 Shopsmith isn't hammered paint, but more of a light splatter texture paint, The touch up paint I bought years ago isn't splatter paint. Is the splatter available anywhere? Again I don't mean Hammered paint.

The New Mark 7's look like they have a dark gray SATIN paint, is that the case?

I may just do a complete disassemble, soda blast everything (soda won't pit the aluminum, only removes paint and leaves the aluminum parts looking brand new and unpainted) and paint the new satin paint on my 1981 SS when I do the 7 upgrade

I have used the Shopsmith Hammered Gray and it resulted in a good paint job BUT it does NOT resemble the texture of the paint finish on my Mark V's.

I would suggest, before you paint the Shopsmith gear, that you purchase a can of the Rustoleum Hammered paint and check it out. It does a pretty good job and is a close match in color.

When I restored a 1954 SS I used the Hammered paint and it still looks good, I sold that one to a friend, he still has it and still uses it. So I am aware of the Hammered finish, but was looking for something closer to original, that not being available I think I want the Gray SATIN, like on the 7's, I can probably go to my local automotive paint store and have that mixed to shoot with my Gravity feed Spray Gun.

I can tell you that paint remover will have minimal effect on that splattered paint(or I have not discovered an effective one).

Soda blasting will probably work.

As for paint to use, getting it mixed as you described is likely a better choice.

FWIW Mark 5s were smooth gray for a spell.

FWIW, the MK 7 is definitely satin but it is not completely smooth. It has a very fine and even texture. Look at the belt cover particularly which is smooth metal.

I called Customer Service today and they said the color is the same for all Shopsmiths that are Gray, your pictures show that is NOT true, I would like to use the SS Mark 7 color/Texture. Plus they only sell it in Spray Cans, backyard Auto Mechanic method. I want to paint with a real spray gun, more even coverage.

So the Local Automotive paint store is the only answer, I just have to pick a color and go with it, he suggests Egg Shell finish , not as dull as FLAT and not as smooth and glossy as Semi Gloss. I will let you know what I come up with.

They did say COLOR. That is not the same as texture or finish gloss. My other two Shopsmiths are splatter finish and more glossy than the Power Pro. However I think the color is the same.

I don't know for sure since I have not done that. All I am saying is that in my opinion the color looks the same. The finish is not. I think some times the finish will make the same color look slightly different. The lighting also makes a difference.

Also, if all you have is someone else's pictures all bets are off. Many times pictures don't render the color the same. I am speaking from looking at my three head stocks in person.

You would need paint with the "EXACT" same "BATCH" number to have any hope of an exact match when repainting. And yes, The texture or sheen level will affect color as well.

Close is about the best, One can hope for!!!!

The most important part here is, The desire to preserve and protect...
