Lowes.com and Shopsmith Mark 7 ordering

Post by mauka »

Living in Hawaii has it's drawbacks, one of which is expensive shipping. When I first became interested in Shopsmith I considered buying a new Mark 7, but the shipping quote from SS was a bit high. Understandable when single items are shipped outside of a container load. Since then I bought a used 1998 model 510, and am having a blast using and learning.

When I read that Lowes was a SS dealer, I searched Lowes.com and found some major upgrade parts listed, including a complete Power Pro headstock ($2148), DIY Power Pro headstock kit ($1645), 510-520 table upgrade ($499), and more. All of which can be ordered shipped to my local Lowes store with no extra shipping. I have not actually ordered anything.

However Lowes.com doesn't list any complete machines to order.

I contacted Lowes customer service for a quote and the relevant part of the response is:

"The only way to get an item that is not on Lowes.com is to contact the vendor and see if they accept a special order and the store is the only one that can do that."

I thought this might be of interest to anyone with a nearby Lowes since shipping is not free regardless of where you live. Perhaps SS will contact Lowes and make more items available without requiring a special order.

Update when I have more.

I just went online to Lowe's to see what they had to say. Interesting in that only a few items are listed, and take a look at the delivery date...... Now unless they are stocking them somewhere it would not seem the date is unlikely due to recent posts that indicate 4 to 6 weeks.

What I've found interesting is that Lowes is location specific as far as items available & price.

Here is Anchorage price on the PowerPro:

Sorry if this was not the intention of this tread but once I get started on something it hard to stop.

I stopped at the shopsmith site and they have a notice that reads:

"** Delivery Delays **

Currently, demand for the Shopsmith PowerPro has exceeded our supply of DVR motors. Shopsmith PowerPro orders will be delayed 6-8 weeks before shipment."

I then went and priced the upgrade kit. Current price $1649.00. Shipping adds $140.43 to my price. If you add that up it comes to $1789.43. At this point Shopsmith I don't believe adds any state tax here in IL but I end up having to pay when I do my income taxes so for all intents and purposes that would be a wash.

Lowe's has the same part listed at $1784.00, at first glance it is looking like Shopsmith is the better deal. Lowe's offers a 5% discount for various reasons and anyone here more then likely could get that. The 5% amounts to $89.20, thus lower the cost to $1694.80. Now Lowe's has free shipping to the store so that would be the end price.

Price from Shopsmith $1789.43, from Lowe's $1694.80 mmmmmmmmmmm

I'm still waiting on a demo to appear near me to finish my second dual tilt upgrade, not willing to drive hundreds of miles but if it were offered at Lowe's for a similar price I could see me getting it that way.

I believe the demo prices are still better but it has been a while so I have no current reference.

And does it make sense that the Anchorage and Hawaii price would be lower than Illinois?

Seems like SS and Lowes.com have an opportunity to sell more by cleaning up and expanding this information.

I just did about a dozen zip code store selections and in all the cases the price was the same. WI, IL, MI, DE, IO, OH and a few others. Interesting.

Maybe during the last price increase somebody neglected to change the Alaska price since it 'wasn't in the US'.

Came in for a few minutes and saw this thread....

Could the price difference be attributed to state and or local taxes and whether or not they had been added into the price?

Just a thought.

Back to the garage.

Be well,

Are taxes added anywhere in the country except at the register?

Don't get me started on that! The shipping to Alaska is reason enough to purchase through Lowe's. I recently purchased a "brand new" 20 year old Shopsmith Planer on eBay, the guy did not want to ship to Alaska because it was too far away, after talking him into it he boxed it up real well, then went to UPS (too heavy for USPS), and was shocked at the price quote. The shipping was just about the price I paid for the item, but it was still over have the price of a new one from Shopsmith. USPS shipping, if you can get the seller to charge actual cost and not add an Alaska premium, is still the best and cheapest way to get things shipped here.
