Spindle play

Does anyone have an easy solution for 10-er play in the spindle? On one of my head stocks I've got what I consider too much between the pulley side and arbor side.

There is an aluminum collar that is on the shaft on the arbor side that pre-loads the bearings to take up the end play.

The play in mine is rotational. I think that fix is for lateral, isn't it?

Without replacing both the quill and the drive end, you can't.
Why is rotational play a bother? Every one I've seen, has that
play. (And, I've seen LOTS!)
You can try greasing the splined shaft, to see if that helps.
Advance the quill, put some grease in the back end, right
in the center of the upper pulley, (you can see the end of
the splined shaft) Let the quill retract, while holding a finger
on the end, which will force the grease up along the shaft.

Rotational play shouldn't be a problem. It's a spline meshing with a cog and rotational play is unavoidable. If the spindle where a fixed spline to a cog, You might be able to do something about the play. However, Since it is a spline which slides back and forth through a cog drive, A certain amount of play is inevitable and unavoidable due to the nature of the beast....
If you pack a little cup grease or equivalent in the drive sleeve side, It will help eliminate spindle chatter and this should be done on a regular basis if the machine is used frequently. If you don't, The "play" will get worse with use!

And, if you're playing with a machine that dates back
to the Truman Administration, well, think about it.
You have a splined shaft, with 6 splines.
Your spindle has 6 recesses for those splines
to ride. You've got a 1/2 horsepower motor.
Now, let's look at your car. If you have a real
(rear wheel drive) car, the splined shaft is a
whole INCH in diameter, and has 18 to 36
splines. And, transmits up to 400 horsepower.
Like I said, this machine has been around since
Ike's predecessor, and I've NEVER heard of a failure!
(Eisenhower's administration predated me by a few
years.)
I've posted how to lube the splines.

If you can share some of the details we might have a solution for you. I know on the more modern machines the idea of using the shaft for such things as indexing can be a problem if you try to use both ends. The solution to that is to put the indexing head on the same side and there is no issue. Maybe we can work out the same sort of thing for your needs.

OK, back when I was in High School
and was in machine shop. we'd pre-load the
lathe chuck, by pulling on it, towards us.
Grab hold of the chuck, WHILE the lathe is off,
and remove the slack. pull the top part towards
you, and the slack is gone.

Is it safe to assume your desire for zero rotational play in the spindle is for wanting to do some fluting on a turning using a second power head with a flexible shaft coupled to the lathe tool post or arm?
