I picked up a Miller Falls No. 109 carving set today. I know nothing about it but the tools looked to be reasonably high quality, at least from what my eye can tell.

I tried to find out more about them but didn't have much luck. It would appear the 9 of the 109 is the number of chisels in the set. Some sets seem to have green on the top of the handles, mine do not. I saw information that some people think these are from the 1950's, someone thought 1920's I pretty sure they are not that old. I could even see these being from the 60's but I've found dates all over the place. So no real reliable information........

If anyone here has a set like this and knows the years or anything else about them I'd like to hear from you. If you don't own the set but know something about them I'd like to hear from you.

sorry, Ed, I can't help you with this quest, but I can say I'm very envious.

I have quite a few carving gouges, but none from Miller Falls.

I have the green tipped ones and like them very much. You have an excellent set. I would post on woodnet.net for more details. There woukd be somebody that woukd know for sure.

I don't have any Miller Falls carving tools. My Wife is the wood carver in this family, but she would be envious of you if she read your thread. She loves good tools, and from what I have heard, Miller Falls was a US tool maker that made good quality tools.
Treat them with care, and they should treat you well too. And, maybe if I am lucky, I can someday find a good deal on a set like that too. Carving tools turn up used around here occasionally, and maybe some will.

Haven't been to woodnet.net in a while and forgot my password. Did the steps to get a new one but nothing yet. Tried to re-register but it knows my email and will not let me. I've also sent two emails to them, thus far nothing is coming back. Checked my spam mail and nothing there either.

Oh well.

Not making much progress on dating these.

That is a super nice set Ed. Definitely old school quality. It really shows in those shanks where they attach to the handles. I also noted the shaped upper edge on the box. Only hand made stuff has that kind of detail these days.
I would like to find a good set later this year. I have a really cheap set someone gave me years ago that is quite rough but does have fairly decent steel in them that will accept an edge. I also have a few odd pieces that I got in boxes of "stuff" at garage sales that are not too bad but I would love to find a nice set like that.
The down-side of a nice set like that is that after we get one we can no longer blame the tools for our lack of skills...

The absence of a ZIP code on the label suggests a production before 1963.

Sill no word about my password, been waiting but I guess I'm not a rush case.

I did check and see the response about the catalogs. From looking at those I did find that the 1939 catalog has the location listed as Miller Falls MA. The 1949 catalog has the Greenfield MA location which matches my label.

Well that is something, and the lack of a zip code points to another more recent change that is not there. So for now it is looking like sometime after 1939 and before 1963.
