What's that sound?

This isn't related but the title came to me because I heard this song the other day:

Buffalo Springfield - Stop Children What's That Sound

If you are interested the sound can be heard here:

So back to the point of this post.

I'm using a dado to cut some 2 x 4 joints and then I start hearing this sound that is not one I'm use to hearing. By training or by something in born I do what I think is the best thing to do and shut down. So what is the source of this new sound?

I start checking things, like since I had just read a post about a blade arbor coming loose I check that, nope. All locks are locked so it not from that or associated things. How about the lower guard? Nope. I can't find any cause so I power up again and the sound is still there. At this point I have to wonder is it in the head stock..... something loose in the powerpro? The sound doesn't seem to have been coming from there and I'm really hoping it not.

Time to dig deeper. Well it takes a while but I found the noise source. I have the Quick-Index Quill Feed Handles on my machine and the hub adapter was loose. The set screw was almost a whole turn loose! The handle being attached and the added load of the dado blade set was producing some vibration and the handle was making the sound.....

So for what ever reason that loosened up is beyond me but it did and the result was the odd noise. I don't use it much on that side (opposite the control panel) as most things I do with this machine it is mounted on the other side. So if you have this set up add the checking of the set screw to your list of things to check.

Just a drop of green or blue Locktite will keep that set screw from backing off again.

I hadn't heard that new version. Of course we use to have SS on back when my kids were younger. The youngest is now 37 and turning 38 before the year is over. Seems odd since I'm still 38 but that is how it is.

I was actually in a store when the original one came on, it has been a long while since I heard it and had to look it up here at home so I could listen again.

You know, hurray for our side....

Well I'm doing some drilling on my other powerpro today and noticed that same connection was loose there, even to the same side of the machine. I have to put an order in for a few things so I think I'll get some of the Permatex 24024 Low Strength Threadlocker Purple since I have another application that is asking for that.

At least this time there was no sound to be heard and wondered about.
