Storage of Plasti Dip?

Many many years ago I got a can of this stuff, yellow as I recall and used it for some pliers then sealed it back up........ well I thought I did but when I went back to use some more of it, it was dried up. It was maybe a week to 10 days and with almost none of it used it was ready for the trash.

So I have a project that I think this stuff would work well on and I got another can. The can looks pretty much like what it did years and years ago and my guess it that it will do the same thing, dry out quickly.

Has anyone addressed this by sealing it in a jar or something? Maybe putting it in a canning jar, sealed with lid?

I also see they have it in a spray can now. Rather expensive, but if you can use it all then perhaps not a bad deal. BTW Lowe's carries it as do a lot of other places.

Ed, I checked mine. It's at least 5 years old and it's still usable.

I do believe a Latex product, water based, not oil based, so I would think like paints of the 2 bases, H2O dries out faster if not sealed up tight.

Maybe they have changed things since I got my first can. We were still in our other house and I'd have to say it was pre 1980. The stuff use to smell pretty strong, like you wanted to use it outside strong.

Even after I put the top back on my wife didn't want it in the house so it was relegated to the basement. I guess that should have been a clue that it was not sealed very well. The solvents were off-gassing and the lid wasn't stopping them.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to remember the smell so that will be some inclination as to if they have changed the solvents since that is the odor that you smell.

If it would last 6 months in the opened can I would be happy.

Just to be on the safe side I think I'll find a jar, maybe an ice tea jar to stick it in after I open it. I just emptied one of those today.

A couple of things that may work. I use to use some bedliner and it would always go bad once opened so I had to throw it away. I was told to store the can upside down and it worked. First time I was ever able to use the whole can before it went bad. Another was I was told to use a vac sealer on small containers to prevent them from hardening. In this case I would think a plastic jar made for the vac sealers would work better than the bags and they are reusable. Hope this works for ou

I have been wondering about a refurb using Plasti Dip spray on the inside of a headstock to see if it would make the sawdust less capable of sticking to the headstock case. They are using it on auto bodies for exterior paint of all things.

As for saving Plasti Dip for extended time, maybe buying the Plasti Dip Jr size would help as more of the product by volume would be consumed in the first project, if you are buying the larger sizes.

I have been looking at the proverbial Black Quill Feed Lever and a can of Red Plasti Dip for a solution to that age old restoration anomaly for a while as well.

Then there is the entire custom color palate with the create your own color suite, and I am thinking, paint, where we are going, who needs paint? It is called the 'Coating' industry now.

Greenie's, Goldies, whatever is now possible, and it cuts down on sound.... maybe the inside is just a place to start.... Oh well, another day...

Store it upside down. Air cannot get in if the material is sitting on the lid.
