Hi All

I bought the sharpening tool for the SS which uses the disk sander. Before I can completely install it I must know the difference between the Mark 5A vs Mark 5B. I have a used 1973 and it's a Mark V according to the name plate. The nameplate does not indicate whether it's a version A or B.

How can I tell?

I am inclined to say a "B", but I do not understand why it would make a difference. How is the 'installation' different?

I'm with JPG. I assume that is referring to the headstock casting designation, which I would assume is a "B" given the year cited, but if it's the sharpening tool I'm thinking of, I don't know how the casting would affect its installation or use. I know the lathe chisel sharpening is done on the aux table, so I could see how a 500 vs. a 510 / 520 would make a difference, possibly.

There is a template for drilling the mounting holes in the extension table. There are various lines on the template and some are indicated as "A" and some "B".

There are two versions of the extension table(wide[7.5"] and narrow[4"]).

I assume a/b refers to that.

A pix or scan of the instruction drawing would help.

JPG beat me to it. Might have something in instructions about 500 vs 505+ table size. Then again, given some of Mother's instructions, it might not.

The A is referenced to the narrow extension table that came standard on the 500 machines. You can upgrade to a wider table which is referenced as a B. See here:

The template has lines to use if you have an A or a B or if you have a 510/520.

What I did was to mount the device on a piece of plywood and simply clamped it to the table if and when I wanted to use it. I used dowels for location so it just set in place and was located.

I never like drilling holes in my shopsmith tables but of course it can be done that way and it will work fine.

I think there is a picture here somewhere of mine mounted on the plywood and I'll see if I can find it if there is interest or I could simply just take another picture....

It appears the "A" and "B" refer to the narrow(4"/A) and wide(7.5"/B) extension tables.

It also appears Ed just said that.
