My wife and I went for a walk this lovely spring afternoon at Hogback Ridge. This is a favorite nearby "preservation park" -- a plot of old-growth forest land that the county has wisely set aside, before this whole area becomes one big 'burb of Columbus. As we were walking along, I spotted something odd growing out of a big scar on a gnarly old tree, and snapped a pic with the cell phone. Anyone have a clue what this thing is?

Mushroom or other fungus?

I think it may be a bearded tooth mushroom?

If it is - it is edible, though I am not advocating trying!!

Usually the bearded tooth is rounder.

Decades ago I dated a woman who was an edible mushroom fanatic. Stacks of books about the things. We trudged through the forest to find Morels.

Anyway that's my guess.

Ben's got it, I think. I Google image searched and came up with a photo of Lion's Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) and Wikipedia says that's another name for Bearded Tooth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hericium_erinaceus

I think Ben nailed it, although these things are apparently more common in the Fall. Here's a pic from Wikipedia.
Purported medicinal uses include promoting nerve regeneration, and improving cognition.

Then again, if not in a woodland setting, Farmer's theory is at least as good.

Ok, here's a much easier one. Same park, a couple of weeks ago. I knew what they were as soon as I saw them, but had only seen them in photos. What are they?
And as you can see below, they were quite plentiful.
