Hi everyone-

My name is Jared Thompson and I live in Lewisville, TX. This is my first post as I am new to the ShopSmith world. I recently inherited my Grandfather's ShopSmith Model 510 that he purchased in 1995. It hasn't been used for years but is working well as a table saw so far.

The only problem is...I don't really know how to use it!

I'm looking for someone in the DFW area who could give me a tutorial on the machine, its various functions and to help me get it into working shape (the headstock is stuck and the speed gauge is sticking as well).

Looking forward to joining the ShopSmith family and getting to work on some exciting new projects!

I actually just ordered the book and got it in the mail yesterday. Hoping to dive into it right away! I'm still stuck in table saw mode for some reason despite applying WD40 to the headstock lock inside and out. If i can just get this fixed I should be on my way to getting started.

Tell us what happens(or doesn't happen) when you attempt to loosen the headstock lock.

Forget about using WD40 for anything relative to penetrating fluid or lubricating.

Unfortunately, nothing happens. The headstock lock will tighten and loosen (I can see it moving on both sides) but then when I go to move the headstock it is completely jammed. I've spoken to a few other people who say that the headstock wedges might be jammed. I found some directions online and am attempting to un-jam the wedges. We'll see if this works or not!

Did you release the locking pin?

Have you moved the headstock on the way tubes since you got the machine? Is the stuck condition a new condition or is it always been stuck?
If you can see the threaded rod turn that may be a good thing. The wedges can be seen where the threaded rod goes through the headstock casting. If they DON'T move out from the headstock then they are stuck and probably stripped. Even though the rod turns and feels like it is releasing the wedges maybe stuck inside the headstock thus keeping it locked to the way tubes.
The threads on the threaded rod may be still OK because it is a harder material than the wedges.

Try unlocking the table from the tubes too and sliding it away from the headstock. Sometimes their is a very small amount of flew in the tubs and if the table is locked it makes it hard to move the headstock (and visa-versa)
