Shop Mallet

I finished my first shop mallet today. The head is Beech and the handle is Red Oak. I was hoping to get some suggestions for a finish. To me, leaving it plain sounds best but I dunno.

Nice job ! Just about any oil finish will do. I use Watco personally but no finish works fine too.

Thanks. I'll do like JPG said and give it a rub down with Tung oil.

JPW works well.

Being kind of old fashion I also like a wash coat of shellac on such things.

So you would dip your fingers in the oil and give it a rub down?

Usually I drizzle s sparing amount on the the workpiece. Then both distribute it and work it in with finger pressure. For larger surfaces my palm works.

It is oil! It will wash off.

Now there are 'finishes' with tung oil and varnish or whatever. Same method, but usually requires wiping off excess after several minutes. Same procedure(by me) but cleaning hands becomes more problematic. I like that finish when sealing is desirable. I use minwax brand.
