By the time you feed them, and put up with them, real expensive eggs, been there, done it, and only good for soup when they are mature.

They don't cost me a dime, in fact, selling the eggs from 10-12 good laying hens brings enough in for feed, eggs for home and supplies for stuff like this tractor. Not to mention the entertainment value.

With that amount of hens then you do make out, looking at your cage I thought it looked like for 2-3, and yes there is some entertainment. I had about 10, and my son had a egg route in the subdivision. I think a $1.00 a dozen back in the 80s. Good laying times 2 eggs about every 3 days per hen. Racoons like to visit the hen house.

Around here we pay $4 a dozen for fresh eggs. I like the taste better since I was brought up on them. Not sure how old I was before we ended up parting with our chickens and my grandma was gone so maybe around 10 or so before I had store eggs. My uncle across the street had them for some years after that but we didn't get many as they used what they had most of the time.

The big problem up where we lived was weasels followed by hawks and then bears. I remember having hawk watch duty when the chickens were roaming. They weighted too much to have the hawk carry them off but it didn't stop the trying.

Yes, this tractor is for only a few. A lady in the city purchased wayyy too may chicks this year (her 1st with chickens) because she thought 1/2 wouldn't make it. Anyway, a silky she gave me was picked on pretty hard and I need to separate her so she'll heal up. To buy a tractor around here, there all $300 or more. NJ uild it yourself and it's $45 if your not using scraps. I might even build a few for a couple extra bucks. Just sell them at the end of the drive.

Wow, $4.00, I go to the farmers market for mom to get fresh eggs and they are $2.50 for white shells and $3.00 for brown shells, all the Millenniums by the brown, DFs, only difference is the type of chick laying them.
Ya Cooper Hawk aka Chicken Hawk, live on birds. I had one by me, and during the winter 3 Morning Doves coming to the feeder that did not migrate south, one morning at the machine having coffee, it was snowing feathers, looked up in the tree over the bird feeder, there was the Cooper plucking away at the breast of a Morning Dove.
