I went to the local hardwood supplier and they had a bin of Walnut end cuts at a really cheap price. They are in the rough at 1" thick and about a square.foot each. It's all highly figured so I thought it would be worth a try. Looks to be very good small box or bowl material.

Well I made it to Amarillo. Interesting town. The home of Bell Helicopters. Before I left I had some shop time and made progress on a couple of projects. I had started a bowl from that figured maple and made good progress on it. I also put the second coat of varnish on the teak cockpit table. With some of the precious teak scraps I also turned a cone for the helm on the boat which is something I have been trying to get to for some time.

I managed to get a day in the shop and get the bowl completed and first coat on. I'm very impressed with the wood. My only concern is how dark will it get with age and how much of the grain detail will be lost. Very difficult wood to turn due to the nature of the burl/grain but I love the end result. Very little sanding required. It shaves to almost a polished surface with a scew chisel.

Fabulous work! If I may ask, how do you present the skew to the work for the finish shaving?

I start at a very high angle at a point where the cutting edge is not in contact with the wood and then bring the chisel up to the level that the cutting edge just begins to shave the wood. You're looking to produce a very fine shaving of wood.

I saw an very unusual tool rest. Can you please explain if you made this, if the post on the back side of the Shopsmith is plain or is it notched like the front post? Thank you.
