This happened today...

When I noticed it I immediately shut down and checked my literature received from SS. Nothing. Checked the forums and searched "inverter heat" and read/skimmed through the two 3-4 year old threads on the PowerPro.
I opened it up and put a fan on it. Removing the "heat sinks"(LOL) I almost burned my fingers. It cooled down and was "ready to run" in about 20 minutes.
I wish there was mention of overheating when using the router for extended amounts of time in the literature. I wish I woulda checked the forums sooner about this issue. Hopefully nothing is damaged and I have learned 20 minutes of routing per 30 minutes of cooldown. Doesn't make for efficient woodworking.

I would think a call to the MS tomorrow would be in order. Get it from the horses mouth.

Fortunately the system gives a warning of impending disaster. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that users have expressed concern about inadequate documentation on the PowerPro Headstock.

I hope that you have talked with Customer Service (or preferably Jim McCann).

I haven't called the mothership yet.
I was getting the headstock cleaned out and inspected before putting it back together.Image
One of the tensioning setscrews for the motor drive belt was almost completely out! I wonder if the overheating caused it or vice versa. Now I get to go through the procedures of motor belt tensioning. Hopefully good learning experience here.
Next....ImageI am at a loss as to where the wear is coming from. Ideas?

Mine does that from time to time. I think it is "normal". It is kind of a bummer to not be able to run it at 10000 RPM for extended periods, but seemingly it is the nature of the beast. I don't think you damaged it, it self protects itself pretty well.

One thought (academic). If these digital motors are so efficient, why so much heat? .... Just a thought.

Run a Mark 5/V with 1 1/8 hp motor set for a spindle speed of 10K and see how much heat IT produces! :D

Ok? This helps here how?

I talked with Anita earlier. Very nice lady and helpful. I have emailed pics of the heatsink. I'm in a holding pattern until Monday though, when the engineer comes in.

I doubt that very much. I am more inclined to believe that the cooling fin got bent somehow.

I am curious though. Does everything seem to be working correctly if you avoid high speed operations for extended periods.

That is saw dust on the fins and not corrosion - correct?

Granted it helps thee not, but does place the comparable efficiency into perspective for Rjent.

Lotta dust on that heat sink.

What was the ambient temperature(the air you were breathing) when this happened? 'The engineer' will likely ask that.
