The ER I got yesterday, on the Speed Changer I have about 1/32" lateral play. Is that too much? He used it as a lathe a lot, so I would guess there is a lot of running time on that SC. Are new Bushings in order?

I intend to, I need to correct the pulley situation and some new belts.

I just remembered, I have a rebuilt one sitting here to go on the one I need to make the bench for. No play in it at all. I will just order a set up. I will have to take it apart to clean it, and set the sheaves for the new cogged belts any way.

Thanks JPG, I just got off the phone with Skip and learned 2 things, A; he has seen that much play and it is not detrimental.
B; which we did not have a good phone connection it seemed, BUT that Head Stock 2 step pulley, not having the 3rd and largest Diam pulley, instead of a normal 3 step, was an ER option.
Answer will be posted after some good guessing, or research if it is out there on why, by the curious here.

I don't know if that is too much but I would replace them. They are not an off the shelf item and there are only two sources currently. Who knows haw long those sources will be around and they are not that expensive. I have 5 ERs here with speed changers. One speed changer I bought rebuilt. The other 4 came with the machines. I bought 3 sets of bushings just in case. One from Skip and two from Tom.

When I started the refurb on S/N 83974 the speed changer had a welded arm. The weld was really very good and I had no thoughts of replacing it. After all when have you seen speed changer parts on eBay? One day one of the arm/shafts showed up un-welded so I bought it. I took the pulley of my welded one and tried to put it on the new one. It didn't fit. The bushings were too small. HUH!!! As we know the OEM bushings have an odd ID. The pulley bushings had no flange but instead copper washers on each side. Someone had used a standard flange less bushing (smaller ID) and had the pulley shaft turned down to fit. Glad I had a correct set of bushings.

I kind of suspected that the play was OK but, I still would get a set of bushings while they are available.

As for the pulley, of course Skip is correct. He has all this stuff on the top of his head. The attached PDF is a page from an original 1953 10ER accessories manual that I have. Look at item 15.

Item 16 in the redone ER Manual from The Montgomery Ward Catalog they inserted.
I figured you already knew. I bet the Kentuckian did not, but it may be beneath him to own an ER.
Now that the beans are spilt, I wonder if Skou knows or knew. Too early for him to be around.
I did order a set from Skip long as I was ordering other things and he machines the flange on them to the proper SS dimension, as long as I need to take it off anyway for the belt change and the ones on there I bet are original.
