This 1985, Mark 5 model 500 that I am working on has an odd hole behind the speed control, none of the others I have ever worked on ever looked like this, my 81 wasn't like this, did they at some point go to the smaller hole like this and then back again? All I know for sure this is a Grayling, as when I soda blasted the headstock the base color was gray and the SN says it is a 1985.

That hole has been shaped differently over the years. As for before/after/when etc. I have not a clue.
