I picked up a bargain today. It's a 510 with some rust issues but looks great inside the head stock and runs up and down easy and sounds very tight. It was a freebie and had no SPTs and no fence but had a sanding disc and all the floating tables as well as the fixed table. My plan is to use it strictly to power the drum sander. Any recommendations on rust removal products ?

Unless you want to get to bare metal, I use PB Blaster penetrating oil with a green Scotch Pad, then seal with Shellac or Pentrol, a light buff, then wax.

I'm Amazed the legs have no rust. That's what I always see first.

All good suggestions, just a matter of how "pure" you want to get those tubes and how much time you want to spend on them. I prefer some Patina, just clean em up and inhibit any more, but I tend to ride em hard and put them away wet, no Show Ponies for me, I rather make saw dust then restore. IMHO

Thanks for the recommendations all. And Beave you have a good eye. The legs it came with are very rusted. I switched them out when I unloaded it with the legs from the 510 I used as the drill press which are pretty pristine.

All my rust removal suggestions have been posted above. Though, I'm kinda like erlover.I just remove the rust and use it.

Well I spent the day refurbishing the 510 and mounting the drum sander. The rust was surprisingly superficial. After lubricating the inards I put the sander on it and all seems to work well. It will be good to be able to use the sander without all the setup. I guess what never ceases to amaze me is how much neglect a SS will endure and yet function so well. It took about 6 hrs work and it really looks good. The V belt mics out at .49 - .50 which means it was probably barely used in the last 35 years. Oh and ER Lover the new one looks very nice !
