I have a Speed Changer from the last purchase on the work bench apart, the Sheaves are all nicely polished from 60 some years of use. I put my straight edge on all of them, they have, all equally about 1/64 of day light in the middle of them from the inner edge to the outer circumference. Do you think this by design or wear?

I would guess wear.

Mine too since his son said he used it as a lathe mostly. I did not have anything to compare it to since the other SC are in service.

My 'reasoning' was the center almost always has the belt rubbing, whereas the inside and outside will only rub at the relevant speed setting.

Does not depend on where he belt is at the most? Also I am thinking of ruffing
up all of the Sheaves, on the rebuilt one since using a Cog belt that runs on it sides for a touch better grip on the Sheaves?? They are supper polished,smooth, maybe so 220/320 wet and dry?

JPG here is how they look, soooo smooooth.

I think smoother would be better. The belts slide into the pulley as they rotate. Tension and wedging provides the drive motion.

I have not put a straight edge on the two I have refurbed but they are definitely not straight/flat. I just attributed it to ware. It does not seem to effect anything. I polished all the sheaves and they work just fine. I have 3 more to refurb which I have not looked at critically but I expect to see the same unevenness.

JS, do you think I should ruff them up a bit, 220/ 320?

I don't think so. I bead blasted mine with 80 grit glass. Then I chucked them up on the Power Pro and used 400 then 600 wet/dry paper. Then 0000 steel wool.

If you use the raw edge FHP belts that Tom and Skip sell there is no problem. Besides the belts are going to polish the sheaves during use so your 220/320 grit is not going to do anything after a few hours of use.
