So I decided my hand tools needed a place to live, and what better location than a wooden tool box, made by hand with those tools.

So out of pure desire to learn in trying out hand cut mitered done tails. First joint was loose...
So if at first you don't succeed, try again and get a tight joint with lots of chip out...
And try again... This time with poor planning that results in nothing more than a crazy box joint due to backwards dovetails...
And try, try again for the fourth joint, tight and not to shabby.
And you get this result....
So overall I decided to embrace my mistakes and let my flawed skills show. I plan on putting some words near each corner as a reminder to keep going. So I'm putting "when at first you don't succeed" "try" "try again" "for skill is acquired not assumed".

Just wanted to share my failures as I continue to embark on the journey. Although maybe next time I'll use a more simple joint for my first all hand tool project.

FWIW, they are more difficult with soft pine than hardwoods.

Good to learn with soft wood - it is more persnickety.

Mitered dovetail joint. Never say lack of ambition is a shortcoming thee possesses.

Thanks for sharing these! It definitely helps knowing I'm not the only one who has difficulty! That last one looks pretty good!!

Good that you kept the box it can be used as an instructional piece to help other woodworkers. Show them the results of specific mistakes and then show the improvements as the mistakes were corrected.

That's exactly why I saved it and am embracing the mistakes. It shall provide me with a reminder to keep trying. No better tool box than one that serves as motivation for keep going with the work.

Now it's time to cut out the rabbets by hand to place in the panel. Time to sharpen those chisels...

I should have started with pine. That is hard maple. But of how durable it will be once done.

Nice start Beave ! Dovetails are always a challenge and by hand an art to master. Joinery is actually a hot topic in our local chapter of AWA. As usual technology has created a rift in the art of joinery. There is discussion going on to separate out furniture made with CNC in the competitions.
