Tree/nut? What is it?

While out walking yesterday I noticed this tree with what I'm guessing is a nut forming. Not something I'm familiar with so if anyone can ID it and save me some research it would be great.

Looks like a immature walnut husk. Also by the leaves.

Gum tree? My neighbor has one. Beautiful, but messey in the fall!

Horse Chestnut.

Very similar to Ohio Buckeye, but from your picture, I'd guess Horse Chestnut.

It is a type of chestnut, but not a horse chestnut. It does not have the leaflet of horse chestnut. It is very similar to the Ohio Buckeye. I would monitor this tree until the fall and see what it casts to the ground and determine if eatable. I do not believe it is American chestnut. If you Google "chestnut trees", you will find many images and you can find this exact one, but I did not find a name to match. I hope you keep us posted, Ed. I have not seen one of these since I left Tennessee in 1967. So, memory is faltering. Sorry I can't be of more help.

From your reference I would say Ohio Buckeye. The leaf clusters appear to be five not seven for the Horse Chestnut. The Horse Chestnut leaves are much more rounded on the ends. These are pointed like the Ohio Buckeye.

Most likely Ohio Buckeye then. I couldn't count the leaflets in the picture. Around here, Horse Chestnut is not winter hardy. Ohio Buckeye is, so I've not seen Horse Chestnut in person.
Side note. Don't eat the nuts. Ohio Buckeye is considered poisonous to humans.
