Simply screwing around in the shop and talking to a person that wants to make chess pieces, I decided to take some walnut scraps and see what the bandsawn chess pieces would look like. So took a printed version of the diagrams in this article http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/proj ... /index.htm
to Staples and enlarged. Not exactly but approximately.

Used one of my new 3/16" blades.

Here's what came out.

Looking good, especially for just "screwing around." I imagine that would have taken me days!

You know, Shopsmith also has a set of plans for turned chess pieces, but I never like the look of the turned knight on that set. I like the head of this knight much better.

Just spit-balling here, but I suppose you could probably use this square pattern to turn round pieces too (trace the profile pattern on some hard board and set it up the lathe duplicator). For the knight, you could Turn just the base, leaving an oversized square stock for the head and then band sawing it out.

Well, I don't have time for that project these days (or too many others in the shop) as the Slow Boat is calling me.....
