Has anybody had a problem with the headstock slipping? I can't seem to fix this problem. I bought this 510 on craig's list in may and though it was about 20 years old most of it was still in the boxes I sent the head stock out to get serviced belts oiled and so on so when I got it back I started to try to get everything squared up so I could use it. when I raised it up to drill press mode it slipped down the way bars and just will not stay put. after that I stripped the wax I just put on and filed the right hand and left hand locks so they were roughed up a little nothing fixed it so I bought a whole new assembly and when I put it back together it still slips. does anybody have any ideas I can try next. I don't know what else I can do.

Have you adjusted the lock stop nut? Located on the backside end of the locking bar.

Do you mean where the two way bars end and they lock to the legs?

When you lock it how tight are you going? Should not be need a gorilla grip but it does need to be snug.

Nothing else been put on the tubes except wax? Tubes need to be waxed with something like Johnson's paste wax, the original formula (red on label). Other waxes work but this is a good one.

How about the other lock for the table, will it stay in place?

It sounds like you have had it apart and now I have wonder if you got it put back together right. It isn't too fussy but it also needs to be in range in order to work. Got any pictures with the locks from the inside when you were working on it? How did you get to the flats to do the sanding, assuming you took it apart? Or perhaps who even you sent it to messed with it?

Have you indicated a location in a previous post? Perhaps someone of us is near by enough to stop in and have a look and "feel".

Hokay I assume you replaced 50,51,78,79,80.(or at least 50,51)
When you replaced them, did you make sure the wedges were equidistant from the center of the threaded rod? That ensures BOTH wedges press against both way tubes when tightened and the rod threads do not bottom out prematurely.

the old one did not have the 177 and the new assembly did not either just the rh and lh and the bolt and the handle and roll pin

yes 50 51 78 79 and 80

and yes they were both seated in what I thought were the correct position as were the old ones
