So my rusty inherited 'greenie' #317956 came with no saw guards.

I was wondering if the lower one was worth getting... specifically for dust collection. I really want to keep my garage clean if possible.

1. Does it work well? That's my main consideration.

2. Which part # do I need? Or is there some custom mod?

3. Does it also work with the sander?

It has a 'dump' port, not a DC port.

Shopsmith does have a saw guard system that should fit your machine. It will come in gray but I guess one could add come paint if you have to have it green.... don't know how well that would work but they do make paints for plastics.

This system gives you dust collection and the top blade guard and the anti-kickback paws which to me makes it well worth the cost. It is for sawing and will not except the larger sanding disk. Other companies offer a 10" sanding disk which would work as they mount like a saw blade on a universal arbor and would fit.

If you want some dust collection the better way for using the shopsmith hardware is to sand outboard and add the dust collection accessory here:

This requires the steel sanding disk so that might be added costs to you but again no dust collection is a bad thing in the shop so you will no doubt want something to collect it rather then letting it fly everywhere.

These systems do not collect all the dust and as you will see there is a lot of dust made. A shop vac or other provision should also be on your list of purchases.

Ed I don't want to highjack the thread but I have been putting together a bunch of remnants that I bought a week ago. An older headstock (1983 model) with stand and way tubes in pretty good shape. Then a collection of things, mostly tables and carriages. Two 510 tables along with two extension tables and fences for both tables. One 500 table carriage and fence. Two of the 12 inch disc. I have decide to use this thing mostly as a drill press, but can also use the disc sander function. So that brings me to your post above and my question. This part that you recommend, I would buy that and when you say sand outboard, do you mean using the end of the headstock on the opposite side of the quill? Was just wondering how this collector sets up etc.
I have no saw guard and will probably not use the table saw function as I have a table saw, but a disc sander would be great and I don't have much money in this thing so I could afford to add this part.

The dust collection part fits on the quill side only. The idea is to mount the dust collector and the steel sanding disk then slide the main table over to with in say 1/8" of the sanding disk. The main table then supports the work piece.

In some cases you will want the table a bit farther away and then use the quill feed to bring the sandpaper in contact with the work piece.

The table tube spacing prevents the 510/520 size dust collector from fitting where it should on the 500 size table for use of the table insert location.

If you happened to find a 510/520 lower saw guard you could remove a few parts and get the same function as the part I posted about. It is some what a subset of the parts.

Thanks Ed, I think I've got it. I will order this chute I think. I want to use the 500 table for the drill press function so having this chute will give me some dust collection with the sander.

Check out this post which shows a dust collector made by a member here out of wood that also works with the aluminum sanding disk.
