Hi everyone,

I've been searching Google, trying to find more information, and was happy when I discovered this message board!

I have a Shopsmith Mark V and it uses the old-style spurs to grip the project.

I have been making smoking pipes lately, and thought I'd try turning my own stems, so pulled out the lathe from storage -- it seems to me that a self-centering chuck would be a lot easier, but I can't find any information on whether it's possible to get something like this.

I don't even know how these large chucks attach to the spindle and I'm wondering if the increased centripetal force might damage the Shopsmith?

Does anyone here have any knowledge or experience about this?

Check out the Nova G3 chuck which SS sells. It is an excellent Chuck and is self centering.

I should mention that this is a model from the 50's. Not sure how relevant that is.

40s. 50s, now, all the same as long as you get the SS adapter which I think if you buy from SS aka the Mother Ship comes with it.
I think she just had a sale on them a week or 2 ago.

The Oneway Talon chuck can also be purchased with a Shopsmith adapter.

Also please post some pictures of your work, it is always inspiring to see what others are making with their ShopSmiths.

The Talon chuck is about the best one made and will work well with the proper shopsmith insert. I have one and love it. I also have several Nova chucks, and they are fine, but I like the Oneway beter. Happy Turning!
