A friend gave me a 5/8" arbor and thin kerf saw blade that he said had been part of his Shopsmith.

I mounted them and they seem to work fine. The thin kerf is a Sysmatic and is nearly new (sharp and clean). I consider myself fortunate but I have a question about the arbor.

With this arbor mounted, I cannot move the carriage as close to the headstock as with all other arbors; the blade will not line up with the table slot. I have to move the carriage an inch or so to the right to line up the blade with the slot.

Am I trying to use an arbor that I should not use on my Shopsmith?

The important question, Dusty, is whether you can use the upper and lower sawguards with the off-brand arbor. If your fingers are properly protected, there should be no problem.

By the way folks, we do make a 5/8" arbor if you want to step outside the high quality but somewhat limited choices of Shopsmith saw blades. See http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... arbors.htm.

If you can now post pictures how about a picture of the arbor? Shopsmith has had many designs over the years and as you may know they made them one size for the 500 and a longer size for the newer machines....... and I have no idea about the older designs but someone here might.

If I recall right you did an upgrade not to long ago...... when you did the upgrade did you make sure to use the new carriage stop ring??? The new one is about 1-1/2" long. (That is the part that spaces the headstock and carriage assembly.)

Yes I did an upgrade but it was from a 510 to 510 Pro.

I do have the carriage stop ring; in fact, that's what caught my eye. I pushed the carriage into position and dropped the table (attempted to) only to find the blade wasn't in line with the slot.

I will take a couple pictures; the blade, mounted on the arbor, is sitting on the bench right now along side of a blade on a 'normal' arbor.

The one on the left is the one in question. When mounted it causes the blade to align to the right of the saw blade slot with the table against the stop collar. The lower dust collar can still remain in place. There doesn't seem to be any hazards. I'm just fearful that the arbor is NOT intended to be used this way; though, I have been reassured that there is no reason not to use it.

What you have is indeed in all likely hood a shopsmith 5/8" dado/molder arbor (505506). The other arbor pictured is the saw arbor.... now if you measure the saw arbor from the end near the set-screw to the blade you will find that on the newer ones that is about 1-5/8+" which is the same as the 5/8" dado arbor with the smaller washer in place.

Get out your ruler and check... my first guess is that the dado arbor has the thicker washer in place (5/8") that sets the blade off by about a 1/2" or that the saw arbor is the wrong one for your set-up. Also measure that stop ring to see if you have the right one....

If you are correct, I'm going to have to buy a set of stacking dado blades. But that's OK, my adjustable dado has done all of the dado work and is probably overdue relief and/or replacement.

The big question, which I will never speak outloud for "anyone" to hear is why do I have it if I've never used it.

I have a 10e and I was wondering wich 5/8 arbor would work on it, I noticed there wer two different tipes. Thanks alot.

The molder/dado arbor (505506) and the 5/8" saw arbors (555321 & 555608) will all work with the 10e. You can line up the saw blade with the upper saw guard with any of them. Personally, I would say the molder/dado arbor would be the better value because of its versatility and price.

And unless I'm mistaken, the molder/dado arbor is almost identical to the saw arbor that originally came with the ER.
