I just got this in an Email from SS, not Shop Smith
Each time you sign into your account, you will complete two steps:
Step 1: Enter your username and password.
Step 2: Enter the security code we text to your cell phone (cell phone provider's text message and data rates may apply).
Well what if you dont have one? Or one without text service/availability?

It is called two step verification and because of increased security breaches more and more places are going to it.

Incidentally, this decision was made by the department head of the Social Security Administration. I can cite many examples of work where money was spent or regulations were set up to prevent certain people or type of people from doing certain acts.
I hate to bring this up, but the budget for the VA has gone up and up the past few years, however, they spend money on fancy buildings, decorations and landscaping, not going to veteran care. I spent many years (31) working for DOD and sometimes, certain leaders would pay for beautification rather than improve the working conditions of the employees. We did our jobs despite certain leaders in charge.

Amen, Steve. I have 40 years total with active duty AF, AAFES, DOD contract civilian and DOD/AF civil service. My wife has 35 years as an Army and AF civilian. It is pretty amazing some of the things that come down the pike.
I would still do it all over again. Absolutely no regrets. To top it off we get 5 retirement checks between us and they all come from the US Treasury. Sorry, but it doesn't get any better than that.

What is happening at the VA is horrible and heads should roll but I doubt that they will. I have contacted my Congressmen and Senator about this. Unfortunately, nothing seems to be happening.
Social Security may be just as bad. However, this thread is regarding the Social Security Administration attempting to make access to online accounts more secure. For that I applaud them.
In November we all have the opportunity to again voice our opinions (satisfaction or dissatisfaction). I do hope that we are all registered to vote and that we will all do that (regardless of party affiliation). We the People must be heard.

Yes we earned a whole lot less for 24/7 service and the civilians were not in Vietnam/Thailand. It took Ronald Reagan to get us a reasonable salary. I think it almost doubled under his administration.
Here is an example. 1976, Kincheloe AFR MI. The UP, oh Upper Peninsula for Dusty (sorry Dusty

). The Strategic Air Command (SAC), 5 B-52H's on hard alert 24/7. It is Mothers Day. We are BBGing. I drive up to the Class VI store (no not an unknown SS, the liquor store on base) to get a bottle of wine. On the way back there are cars every where and it is a weekend. I get to the our house (on base) and the wife says it is a recall. Mothers day!! Go to work and we load the fleet with live Nukes (that is what I did, I am a weapons guy). Live Nukes because part of the test was to break out the weapons from the Weapons Storage Area (WSA) and deliver them to the flight line to be loaded. Security and custody was paramount. Then when delivered to the aircraft custody and security changed hands and it all had to be signed for with serial numbers.
I could go on but 3 days later the exercise ends after 12 hour shifts and it was called on Mothers day on a week end. There are really no days off. It takes the chow hall guys to provide box lunches, admin to do the paperwork, the hospital to provide emergency services and on and on.

That is it, about half way between the Mackinaw bridge and Sault Ste. Marie. Out in the middle of the woods. The only base I ever knew of that didn't have a fence completely around it. You could walk or drive out into the woods from almost anywhere on base.
