I am talking finial finish, I am a 2lb cut Shellac, dyes for color then a stain over it if desired to get more color and depth, or just some BLO cut 50% grain to pop and depth. Ya Dusty BLO, Boiled Linseed Oil.
To my point I am a MinWax, Old Spice man, I am doing a project in the garage it has been hot and humid, then a bit cooler but humid, I use MinWax wipe on Oil Poly, which is there brush on cut a bit with MS, mineral spirits or a similar product over a first coat of Shellac, drys fast, the Shellac, did a coat of wipe on MW wipe on, humid,took over night to dry, 2nd coat Friday morning, took all day to dry, did the 3rd coat after supper, now dry air but temps the same, 1100pm dry. You got to know your finishes, and stay consistent with the ones you use to understand there characteristics.
They say Shellac for furniture cant take water on them, my Machinist work bench I bought has a high density particle board top on it, in a hurry to seal it, 3 coats of 2 lb cut Shellac to seal it. My sweating Martini glass has not left a ring or a discoloration on it in 2 months on the Shellac surface. But I use a waxless Shellac. That could be the difference. Waxless drys harder and takes another type of finish over it better then Shellac with wax in it.

I thought that Shellac was supposed to be OK for water resistance (am too lazy to get up and check the Flexner book). But you'd better not spill that Martini on it!

I have used it by mixing the flakes myself to whatever cut I want. I used a 2 lb cut on my last project and sprayed it on mixed with a dye to get the right color. Had to put on about 10 coats to get the color I wanted but it drys really fast so I was done in one afternoon. I haven't tried putting vodka on it but after it cured it appears to be a much harder finish than normal shellac.

I would check it out myself, but my Flexner Bible is 93 miles away
